For years, our dining room didn’t have a light fixture at all.
It’s a new build and the builder didn’t include one, and I always pictured replacing it with a beautiful statement chandelier someday. The problem was that every fixture I fell in love with seemed to cost $400 to $600, and I just couldn’t justify spending that much.
So I waited.
And waited.
Eventually, I decided that having something was better than staring at an empty ceiling any longer. I found an affordable chandelier that fit my budget, knowing it wasn’t exactly my dream fixture.
When we installed it, I immediately knew something felt off.

For us, this upgrade cost far less than many home projects, but it’s one of the improvements we notice every single day.
Before You Buy a Dining Room Chandelier
If you’re shopping for a new dining room light fixture, here are a few things I wish everyone knew before ordering one.
Measure Your Table First
A chandelier that’s too small can disappear in the room, while one that’s oversized may overwhelm the space.
As a general rule, your chandelier should be about one-half to two-thirds the width of your dining table.
Hang It at the Right Height
Most designers recommend hanging a dining room chandelier about 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop for standard 8-foot ceilings.
This keeps it low enough to create a cozy feel without blocking anyone’s view across the table.
However, if you re-arrange your room a lot or want to be able to walk under the light fixture at any point, I think it’s OK to make your own rules. When we host birthday parties, we like to move the table against the wall and have people mingle in the open space. For this reason, we mounted ours a little higher. We also have a floor plan that is completely open, kitchen then dining then family room. I did not want a low hanging light fixture in the way of my line of sight.
Choose Warm White Bulbs
The color of the light matters just as much as the fixture itself.
I recommend warm white bulbs, around 2700K, for dining rooms. They create a softer, more welcoming glow than cooler white bulbs.
Make Sure Your Bulbs Are Dimmable
Even if you don’t install a dimmer right away, buy dimmable LED bulbs so you’re ready if you decide to upgrade later.
It’s a small detail that’s easy to overlook and it’s annoying to have to buy more bulbs when you feel like you have perfectly good ones.
Don’t Skip the Dimmer Switch
If you only take one piece of advice from this article, let it be this.
The dimmer switch is what transformed our dining room.
It lets the same space work for everything from weekday homework and crafts to cozy dinners and entertaining friends.
