How Home Chef Reduced My Mental Load as a Busy Mom – Home Chef Review

My Review of Home Chef After 2 Months

A couple months ago, I decided to try Home Chef mostly because I was tired of carrying the constant mental load surrounding dinner.

Not necessarily cooking itself. I actually enjoy cooking but I haven’t always and it’s a newer thing for me. (Baking is more my thing)

It was everything around cooking that started to feel exhausting:

  • figuring out what to make
  • checking ingredients
  • planning grocery trips
  • trying to use everything before it went bad
  • coordinating meals around busy weekdays
  • and still somehow ending up staring into the fridge at 5 p.m. wondering what sounded manageable

I wanted something that would make weeknights feel easier without completely removing the experience of cooking real meals at home.

Now that we’ve been using Home Chef consistently for about two months, I can say it’s helped our family more than I expected.

Not in some dramatic, life-changing way.
In a quieter, more sustainable way. A quiet luxury, if you will.

The kind of change that simply makes everyday life feel smoother.

The Biggest Difference Was Reducing Mental Load

The biggest benefit for me wasn’t even convenience.

It was reducing decision fatigue.

I didn’t realize how much energy I was spending constantly thinking about dinner until I didn’t have to think about it quite as much anymore.

Instead of trying to plan every meal from scratch each week, we already had a few dinners figured out ahead of time.

And honestly, that alone made weeknights feel calmer.

Dinner stopped feeling like another unfinished task sitting in the back of my mind all day.

We’ve Been Cooking at Home More Consistently

One thing I noticed pretty quickly is that Home Chef removed a lot of the excuses not to cook.

Before, there were definitely nights where I’d look at a recipe and think:
“That sounds good, but I absolutely do not have the energy for all of that tonight.”

Especially meals that felt slightly more complicated or involved.

Now, because everything is portioned out and organized already, meals that once felt like “weekend meals” suddenly feel manageable on a regular weeknight.

Even on nights where I’m exhausted, I can usually still muster up the energy to make these because the process feels approachable instead of overwhelming.

And that’s been huge for us because it means we’re much less likely to fall back on the super easy “everyone fend for themselves” dinners just because we’re tired.

Before, on especially exhausting nights, it was easy to default to something like:

  • chicken nuggets
  • nachos
  • sandwiches
  • or random snack-style dinners

And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with those meals sometimes. Real life is real life.

But having Home Chef ready to go has helped us eat more balanced, intentional meals during the week without requiring a huge amount of extra energy.

It creates a really nice middle ground between:
“cook an elaborate meal from scratch”
and
“just make whatever is fastest because everyone’s exhausted.”

It Made Trying New Meals Feel Less Intimidating

One unexpected benefit was how much more willing I became to try meals I normally would’ve avoided.

When I grocery shop on my own, I naturally stick to familiar meals because they’re easy and efficient. But having curated meal options already there made it easier to branch out without feeling overwhelmed.

We’ve tried new sauces, seasoning combinations, vegetables, and meals that I honestly probably would’ve saved for “someday” or a weekend with more energy.

And because everything comes pre-portioned, it doesn’t feel wasteful or intimidating.

A lot of the meals genuinely felt restaurant-quality while still being realistic enough for busy weekdays.

Honestly, one of my favorite parts has simply been hearing everyone at the table enjoying something new.

There’s something really satisfying about finding meals your family genuinely gets excited about, especially when they’re dishes you may not have otherwise made yourself.

The Price Ended Up Feeling More Reasonable Than I Expected

Initially, Home Chef sounded expensive to me.

And if you only compare the cost to a single grocery item or ingredient, I can understand why people hesitate.

But after using it consistently for two months, I honestly don’t feel like it drastically changed our grocery budget.

If anything, it helped cut down on:

  • extra grocery trips
  • wandering through multiple aisles looking for ingredients
  • impulse purchases
  • forgotten ingredients going bad in the fridge
  • and buying full-size specialty ingredients for recipes I may only make once

I still grocery shop for breakfasts, lunches, snacks, staples, and some dinners, but having several meals already planned out each week has made grocery shopping feel much simpler overall.

For us, the convenience and reduction in waste balanced things out more than I expected.

Another thing I didn’t fully expect was how much easier it became to involve my girls in cooking.

Because everything is already organized and the instructions are simple, it feels much easier to let kids help without the kitchen turning into total chaos.

Some of my favorite nights lately have honestly just been:

  • music playing
  • everyone in the kitchen
  • trying a new recipe together
  • and sitting down to a meal we all actually enjoyed

Not every meaningful family moment has to be elaborate.

Sometimes it’s just slowing down long enough to cook together.

It Also Made Sharing the Cooking Load Easier

My fiancé is more than happy to cook anytime. I’ve just naturally fallen into the role of being the primary cook most nights, which I think happens in a lot of households without anyone really planning it that way.

What I’ve really appreciated is how easy Home Chef makes it to hand over the reins when I’m just not in the mood to cook.

There’s no:

  • hunting for ingredients
  • figuring out substitutions
  • scrolling Pinterest for recipes
  • or trying to explain a complicated meal

I can literally say:
“Everything’s in the bag and the recipe card is right there.”

And dinner still gets made.

That simplicity removes so much friction from weeknights.

Some nights I genuinely want to cook. I’ll put music on, take my time, and enjoy the process.

Other nights, I don’t want to think about dinner at all.

Having meals ready to go has made it much easier to adapt depending on the day instead of feeling stuck in an all-or-nothing cycle.

Some of Our Favorite Meals So Far

At this point, we’ve tried way more meals than I originally expected to.

Some have become repeat favorites, and others surprised me because they were dishes I normally wouldn’t have attempted myself.

A few standout categories for us:

  • rice bowls
  • stir fries
  • pasta dishes
  • tacos and quesadillas
  • sheet pan meals
  • comfort meals that still felt fresh and balanced

I’ll keep updating this post with photos, favorite meals, and videos because honestly, it’s been fun discovering meals we probably never would’ve made otherwise.

Final Thoughts After 2 Months

I don’t think Home Chef replaced cooking for us.
I think it made cooking feel more realistic.

Less overwhelming.
Less mentally draining.
More approachable during busy weeks.

And for this season of life, that’s incredibly valuable.
